Principle of Water Cold Plate

The principle of a water cooling radiator is very simple, generally composed of a water cold plate, a water pump, a cold row, a water pipe, water-cooled liquid, and a fan. Because of the physical properties of water, it does not conduct heat better than metal. However, flowing water has excellent thermal conductivity. In other words, the heat dissipation performance of the water-cooled radiator is directly proportional to the flow rate of the refrigerant liquid therein. The flow rate of the water cooling liquid is related to the power of the water pump of the water cooling system.

The water cooling radiator conducts the heat from the heat source to the water-cooling liquid through the water cold plate. The water cooling liquid is circulated to the water cooling row through the water pump. There are fans to cool it down and then cycle again. Moreover, the heat capacity of water is large, which makes the water-cooled refrigeration system have a good heat load capacity. The direct benefit of this is that the working temperature curve of the heat source is very gentle.

A water cooling system generally consists of several parts, including a heat exchanger, a circulation system, a water tank, a water pump, and water. Heat dissipation structures can also be added as required. Although water conducts heat no better than metal, flowing water conducts heat extremely well. The heat dissipation performance of a water-cooled radiator is directly proportional to the flow rate of the water-cooling liquid (water or other liquids). The flow rate of the water cooling liquid is related to the power of the water pump of the refrigeration system. And the heat capacity of water is large, which makes the water-cooled refrigeration system have a good heat load capacity. It is equivalent to 5 times that of the air-cooled system, and the direct benefit is that the working temperature curve of the heat source is very flat. For example, when a system using an air-cooled radiator runs a program with a heavy workload, there will be a temperature spike in a short period of time, or the temperature may exceed the warning temperature. However, due to the large heat capacity of the water-cooled heat dissipation system, the thermal fluctuation is relatively much smaller.

There are three main factors for the heat dissipation efficiency of a water-cooled radiator. The first is the design of the water cooling plate. The water-cooled plate is in direct contact with the heat source, so rapid heat conduction is very important. Generally, the water-cooled plate is made of aluminum to contact the heat source, and micro-channels are designed on the side that is in contact with the water-cooled night. It can not only increase the contact area, but also increase the flow rate, so that the water cooling liquid can take away more heat. Different designs of water channels will bring different heat dissipation effects.

The second is the head of the pump. The head of the pump directly determines the water flow speed. The physical characteristics of water cooling liquid are that the faster the flow speed, the better the thermal conductivity. Therefore, in order to conduct heat quickly to the water-cooled radiator, the water pump must have sufficient lift. The last is the design of the water cooling radiator and fan. Existing water-cooled radiators and cold radiators are generally installed on the back of the chassis, directly cooled by fans, and the water-cooling fluid in the cold radiator is cooled to achieve recirculation.
