Optimized Design of the Analysis of Skived Fin Heat Sink

According to the different molding processes of the heat sink, it can be roughly divided into extrusion heat sink, skived fin heat sink, welding heat sink and so on. The more commonly used is extrusion and skived fin heat sink. The production of extrusion is relatively simple, but due to the limitation of its fin spacing, it is mainly used for the heat dissipation of smaller power devices.

The fin spacing of the skived fin heat sink can be designed smaller and the wings can be thinner. So it is mostly used for heat dissipation of high-power devices. However, due to the characteristics of its molding process, each heat sink needs to be processed from zero. In other words, in the early stage of each project design, we can optimize all parts of the skived fin heat sink, including the thickness of the substrate, the height and thickness of the fins, the thickness, and the fin spacing.

The skived fin heat sink is different from the extrusion heat sink. It used previously used will not reduce the cost of the heat sink. When choosing a skived fin heat sink, what parameter optimization should be considered?

1. To teach each in accordance with different aptitudes

The size of power consumption requires differently for the substrate thickness of the skived fin heat sink. The power consumption of the device is transmitted to the radial heat conductivity of the heat sink. These thermal resistances are the key to affecting the temperature rise of the device. The main source of these two thermal resistances is the substrate of the heat sink, so the thickness of the substrate needs to be designed with the actual power consumption.

The fan selected by each item may be different. For example, most of the DC fans are used in high-frequency UPS, and most of the AC fans are used in the industrial frequency UPS. In terms of appearance, there is no difference in DC fans and AC fans, but its performance is large. The wind pressure of the DC fan can achieve twice or even higher AC fan. The greater the wind pressure, the higher the damping of the radiator. There is a large gap between the fin spacing and thickness of the AC fan and the DC fan.

2. Cost -effectiveness

In terms of cost, the fan used by the previous project has no effect on the cost of skived fin heat sink. Because each one requires material costs and processing costs. And if we carry out proper design and make a good match between cost and performance, we can design a higher cost -effective heat sink.

3. How to optimize the design ofskived fin heat sink?

The optimization design of the heat sink is mainly optimized in the thickness of the substrate, the height and thickness of the fins, and the spacing of the fin. In particular, the material and whether it is inlaid heat pipe or vapor chamber, etc.

The main optimization design principle is to reduce the heat resistance of the radiator and the performance of the matching fan. These two aspects can be implemented by using formulas or using software. The error of the formula calculation is generally 10%-15%. For software simulation calculation,it is generally 5%-10%.
