Friction Stir Welding: All You Need to Know

Views: 25     Author: Site Editor     Publish Time: 2022-03-31      Origin: Site

Friction stir welding abbreviated as (FSW) includes the solid state joining process which uses frictional heat created through a rotating tool that needs to join materials. The non-consumable tool, along with a shoulder and  profiled probe, is plunged and rotated into the interface within the two work pieces. It then traverses with the joint line, that causing the material becomes heat and soften. The shoulder acts like to have this plasticized material, that is mechanically mixed førte purpose to produce a solid phase weld.

FSW is also environment friendly because it produces no spatter, fume, and UV radiation

It Uses in machine tool technology, that making the process very easy to automate, and highly repeatable plus reducing the need of skilled welders.

What is friction stir welding?

Being a solid state process friction stir welding works with non-consumable tools that are plunged & rotated into workpieces. When the tool moves through the interface it makes the material soften and heated.

Introduction of advanced technology of friction stir welding

Twin Stir TM technique

The concept is involves with a pair of tools applied that on opposite sides of all the workpieces and displaced slowly in the direction of travel. The contra-rotating always simultaneous double-sided and operate with the combined weld passes that has certain advantages

Parallel Twin-stir ™

It enables defects all associated with the lap welding that are to be positioned on all  the 'inside' between the two welds. This technique always overcomes the issues of 'plate thinning.

Tandem Twin-stir ™

It can be applied to all conventional Friction Stir Welding joints and remove reactive torque. More specifically, the tandem technique not only improves the weld integrity through fragmentation and dispersion but also keeps the residual oxide within the weld region through the following tool.

Staggered Twin-stir ™

It means that an outstanding wide weld region could be created. Importantly, the tools can be positioned in front and slightly to sides of the other therefore the second probe half overlaps the previous weld regions.

Development and Application of Friction Stir Welding Technology

The process is mainly used in industry to join aluminum alloys based on all grades, whether it is cas plus rolled or extruded. FSW has been also shown to weld aluminum alloy along with butt joints with a thickness ranges between 0.3mm and 75mm even in a single pass, that also depending on the alloy grade along with the capability of the given FSW machine.

FSW has been used for many years in a variety of applications in different industries including aerospace, shipbuilding, rail to electronics, even including EV battery trays.

Other materials options that have been combined with FSW include

lmagnesium,

ltitanium,

lcopper,

lnickel and steel alloys, plastics as well as  metal matrix composites (MMC)  also have been explored. This process also shows the ability to join dissimilar combinations that are related to given materials including aluminum to steel.

What are the Advantages?

Friction stir welding provides plenty of advantages over other conventional arc welding processes. These include:

Being a solid state welding process, FSW is considered largely defect free from everything joining method without hot cracking, porosity plus solidification cracks. Owing to the lower temperatures materials there is a very reduction in shrinkage along with distortion in the given material that are being joined. Moreover,

No filler materials, along with flux or shielding gas should be required for aluminum alloys.

Can work in all position

Having Good mechanical properties which make it perfect for aluminum alloys and typically equals or can exceed those obtainable materials by completing processes.

Energy efficient

It is also able to join many like ‘non-weldable’ aluminum alloys, like those belonging from the 2xxx plus 7xxx series. Also, No requirement are required for special edge preparation methods in most applications

What are the Disadvantages?

Though friction stir welding offers too many advantages, yet there are a few Disadvantages that are associated with this process. These include:

lExit hole that left after withdrawing process or tool from the given  materials to be joined; therefore, , this may usually be responsible for in the design of that part or through using run on/off tabs.

lThe need for effective & significant down forces along with traversing forces which means that the clamping on that part should be joined more substantial than that for arc welds.

lGaps between these parts need to be joined and controlled as there should be no filler material used in this process.

Why Friction Stir Welding Consider Green Technology

Friction stir welding is known as green technology due to its environment friendliness plus energy efficiency. Unlike other standard fusion welding, no doubt, friction stir welding used virtually no harmful fumes, consumables and generates. This is because the welding process does not demand any filler metal plus shielding gas, therefore no harmful emissions can be created.

FAQS

1.What materials can you use in friction stir welding?

Materials you can use in Weldable by Friction Stir

lAluminum

lMagnesium

lCopper and copper alloys

lHafnium and zirconium

lInconel and superalloys

lSteel and ferrous alloys

lTitanium

lDissimilar materials

2.What’s the principal Divergence between friction stir and friction welding?

Friction welding (FW) is a method that works on the principle of creating thermal energy for all welding operations through mechanical friction between all stationary parts and moving parts. Friction stir welding (FSW) is another process that is widely used to design dissimilar joints.

3.What is friction stir processing?

Friction stir welding includes the solid state joining process which uses frictional heat created through a rotating tool that needs to join materials. The non-consumable tool, along with a shoulder and  profiled probe, that is plunged and rotated into the interface within the two work pieces. It then traverses with the joint line, that causing the material becomes heat and soften.

4.In terms of cost, how is friction stir welding as compared to other welding processes?

Friction stir welding is a cost-saving process of aluminum alloys and has been shared by users. Friction stir welding is known as green technology due to its environment friendliness plus energy efficiency. Unlike other standard fusion welding, no doubt, friction stir welding used virtually no harmful fumes, consumables and generates.

Conclusion

All friction welding processes are considered environmentally safer – and also safer for those people who are doing the work – than that of traditional welding methods.

Bottom line is that all friction welding techniques deliver durable and strong welds. They do cost effectively, along with minimal health issues and environmental impact.
