What is liquid cold plate?

Liquid cold plates provide localized cooling of power electronics by transferring heat from device to a liquid that flows to a remote heat exchanger and dissipated into either the ambient or to another liquid in a secondary cooling system.

Cold plates are metal blocks(generally aluminum or cooper) that have inlets and outlets and internal tubing to allow liquid coolant to flow through.

Cold plates are an integral part of closed loop liquid cooling.this system is defined as a high capacity cooling system that uses liquid as a coolant and a heat exchanger for heat removal from the coolant .

The most commonly used fluids are water, inhibited glycol and water solutions, dielectric fluids,and custom design transfer fluids.

 

How do Liquid Cold Plates Work?

As the plates absorb electrical waste heat, they use liquid cooling to dissipate it through the flow paths. The flow paths inside the cold plate can be machined into a variety of shapes and sizes that allow the cold plate to absorb and transfer large amounts of heat more efficiently. The effective heat transfer coefficient of a cold plate depends on the available surface area in the flow path, the fluid used, the flow rate of the fluid, and the material used to manufacture the cold plate.

Brazing Plate

Vacuum brazing is to use a solder with a melting point lower than the melting point of the parent material in a vacuum state. At a temperature lower than the melting point of the parent metal but higher than the melting point of the solder, the liquid solder is used to wet, spread and fill the surface of the parent metal. Seam is a welding method for connecting parts. Vacuum brazed cold plates use this principle to realize the connection of aluminum base plate, composite brazing material plate and aluminum cover plate.
